What is the treatment for?
It may be considered for uneven texture, visible pores, superficial acne scars, certain surface scars or tired-looking skin. It can also be an option when a treatment for texture is wanted without using a chemical agent.
It does not erase a deep scar and does not guarantee any “collagen stimulation”. Skin responds in variable ways.
Who is it for?
For someone whose goal is textural, and who accepts a few days of redness. Very reactive skin, infected skin, or skin with an active dermatosis are poor candidates at the time.
A history of problematic scarring, pigment disorders, cold sores or recent isotretinoin treatment must be mentioned. They may change the indication.
Areas concerned
The face is the area most commonly treated for texture concerns. The depth must be adjusted for the neck and other regions; the same settings are not used on the body.
How a session generally unfolds
After cleansing, and often a surface numbing cream, the device or pen moves methodically over the area, at a depth suited to the region. The skin turns red, rather like a controlled sunburn.
Applying a product during or just after the procedure, when offered, is agreed beforehand. A single session tells little. A series may be proposed, then stopped if the skin shows no clear benefit.
What kind of result
Improvement is gradual: texture may become more even, the skin slightly more supple and superficial scars less noticeable. The expected degree of change should remain realistic.
How it changes over time
The initial redness fades over a few days. Changes in texture are assessed over several weeks while the skin repairs. Scheduling sessions too close together is more likely to cause irritation than improve the result.
Possible after-effects
Redness, warmth, tenderness, dryness, rarely a small pinpoint bleed or a crust. A pigment risk exists, especially with sun. Infection is rare if the skin and equipment are properly prepared.
General precautions
The skin should be calm on the day. Afterwards, irritating actives, early make-up, swimming pools, intense exercise and sun are generally to be avoided during repair.
Applying “active” products yourself to freshly perforated skin is not harmless. Nothing should be added without agreement.
Questions
Is it the same as a home roller?
No. A medical procedure controls depth, hygiene and the indication. Home devices offer none of this framework and may irritate or infect the skin.
Can an acne scar be treated?
Some superficial scars may be considered, depending on their type. Complete disappearance cannot be promised.
Should I plan downtime?
Redness lasting from a few hours to a day is usual. Depending on the depth of the treatment, it can be wise not to place the session the day before an important engagement.
